Rough week, recovered
Last week was rough on my ego. Difficult exam Monday (molecular genetics), got it back Wednesday, grade 60%. Omigod I have never in my life received a D on an exam. The grading was rough (he doesn't much believe in partial credit, though it's all essay questions). However, looking closely, I can't blame anyone but myself. I didn't study enough as the lectures passed by (too damn much French homework!), and a single weekend of nonstop studying just wasn't enough. Too much detail drained out through the sieve in my head, especially on bacteria; my eukaryotic bias was evident and painful. On the other hand, there was really and truly an unreasonable amount of very detailed material covered for this exam.
Oh, well, what's done is done. Saturday I wrote a poem and felt so much better.
Meanwhile, my knee is still cranky. I saw my doc Thursday -- got my blood screening results and consulted him about the knee. My blood glucose, cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol were all high, but the glucose was the biggest concern. It's been creeping up the past several years despite all the exercise and slightly better diet during the past year. I may finally be officially diabetic? Shit. He took more blood for glycosylated hemoglobin test (long-term average blood glucose) and C-reactive protein test.
He was in a hurry but quickly probed and manipulated my knee, concluding it's just a strain, not serious, and prescribed something anti-inflammatory. It is actually working, getting better, not tender/painful any longer. But there is a weird behavior in my knee when I get up to walk after sitting for a while. Things are moving around down there, and I don't know what is moving or why. It feels like a muscle here and there just knots up and then relaxes. It feels like my kneecap is moving around, but I'm not sure that's possible.
Doc looked like he didn't believe me last Thursday. I'll see him again this Thursday and will question him about it again. No spa open house this week. Everybody was in a big hurry to open their brand new spa last week, and I was there at the wrong time. I looked over their offerings, and most of it was very expensive cosmetic nonsense (botox, abrasions, etc.). I was hoping for massage and seaweed baths. I got a call Saturday asking me to come in to discuss my test results. Damn, that sounds negative. If all were well, they'd just say so on the phone.
