Lewis Black, etc.

We saw Lewis Black perform on New Year's eve -- great fun.  He was possibly madder & funnier than ever. The guy Bowman who opened for him, apparently they tour together, just wasn't funny. I can't figure out why such a brilliant comic would haul such a non-brilliant comic around with him. What's the tie that binds?

Today I am strutting around full of myself because I biked 18+ miles, my record so far. I have been feeling really sluggish and almost depressed lately, lazing around like a dormant bud, sleeping late & eating. Suddenly I feel like springtime. Must be all that blood coursing around, sweeping away the cobwebs.

Reading Canadian novels lately (for my lit class spring semester). Started with Settlers of the Marsh by Frederick Grove, a weird guy with a hinky history, but he apparently captured the essence of homesteading in northern Manitoba. I still can't get over how time didn't fly -- years between conversations, decades between love and marriage, emotional extremities never mentioned, working one's ass off dawn to dusk. Awful, but fascinating.

Now reading Margaret Laurence, The Diviners. Poverty, odd characters, how to grow a writer. So far I'm finding Canlit very much worth my time.
